Let Senators Breastfeed on the Senate Floor

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm Rachel P-N of PL+US, and I started a petition to Members of the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration, Sen. Richard Shelby (AL-1), and Sen. Mitch McConnell (KY-1), which says:

We urge you to make the Senate more welcoming to Senators who are new parents, by allowing these Senators to take paid family leave and not be physically present for votes, and to bring their babies to the floor within the first year of the child's life.

My name is Rachel, and my Senator, Tammy Duckworth, made history -- by giving birth to a daughter!

In 230 years Senator Duckworth is the first Senator to give birth while in office, and as an Illinois voter and mom of two adorable kids, including a newborn, it makes me so proud.

Like me, and most new moms in the country, I bet the challenges around returning to work are already on her mind.

Senate rules prevent her from taking maternity leave, at least not without missing votes! And they don̢۪t let her bring her new baby on the Senate floor -- so she might really struggle to prioritize breastfeeding when she has to rush back in time for votes.

These Senate rules are ridiculously outdated - and send a terrible signal to employers everywhere.

That̢۪s why I've started a campaign to change the rules to allow all Senators to bring their babies to the floor (within the first year of the child's life) -- join me!

We have a severe and persistent leadership gap in this country. Just 5% of CEOs in Fortune 500 companies, 8% of Governors and 19% of Congress are women.

As a result, there are so few leaders who have had the experience of giving birth at all, let alone while serving in office. It's no surprise that our policies around birth and babies in America are among the worst in the world.

We need to change that so new parents can fully lead and represent us.

As Senator Duckworth says "whether you are a woman or a man, whether you're breastfeeding or not, or you've adopted, you should be able to bring that child on to the floor and continue to do your job."

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

—Rachel P-N

Precipice of a constitutional crisis

Firing Mueller or Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein—who's overseeing the special counsel's investigation—would set off a constitutional crisis that would shake the foundation of our democracy.

Dear MoveOn member,

We've come to the most dangerous moment yet of Donald Trump's presidency and are on the precipice of a constitutional crisis.

In the aftermath of the FBI's raid of the office, home, and hotel room of Trump's longtime personal attorney and self-described "fixer" Michael Cohen, Trump is accusing special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of being "A TOTAL WITCH HUNT!!!" and "an attack on our country."1,2

Trump went so far as to openly admit to reporters on Monday night that he's considering firing Mueller, saying, "We'll see what happens. Many people have said [I] should fire him."3

Let's digest that. Trump would fire the leader of the investigation that has already landed multiple guilty pleas and dozens of indictments, and is the most serious effort to understand Russian interference in our elections.

Firing Mueller or Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein—who's overseeing the special counsel's investigation—would set off a constitutional crisis that would shake the foundation of our democracy. And, Eddie, we've reached a crisis point: I put the odds that Trump fires Mueller or Rosenstein within the next 10 days at better than 50-50.

We must be ready because our response will help determine whether Congress uses its constitutional power to rein in Trump—or not. And that's why I'm writing to you right now.

MoveOn has had immense foresight to spend months building a rapid-response network—now numbering 800 planned events and more than 317,000 people—to put into action immediately after Mueller is fired or Trump otherwise acts to end the investigation.

But MoveOn still needs to raise $250,000 to have the resources to support the network in the chaotic aftermath of a firing. Can you chip in $3 to MoveOn right now?

Yes, I'll chip in right now.

Cohen has been one of Trump's most trusted advisers for the past decade.4

In response to questions from the media about Cohen paying Stormy Daniels $130,000 before the 2016 election, Cohen tweeted, "A person who deserves my loyalty receives it. I will always protect our @POTUS [President of the United States]."5

When the media reported that Trump's first wife, Ivana, said in a deposition that Trump had raped her, Cohen told the reporter, "You write a story that has Mr. Trump's name in it, with the word 'rape,' and I'm going to mess your life up ... for as long as you're on this frickin' planet ... you're going to have judgments against you, so much money, you'll never know how to get out from underneath it."6

The search warrant that enabled the FBI to seize privileged communications between Trump and Cohen resulted from a tip from Mueller but was obtained by the office of the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and required high-level authorization within Trump's Justice Department.7

It's an extraordinary step for the Justice Department to take—bringing us to this fever-pitched moment.

Click here to chip in $3 to MoveOn and help defend the Mueller investigation by supporting more than 800 protests across the country, which will take place if Trump fires Mueller or Rosenstein.

MoveOn is working at a feverish pace to put all of the pieces in place in time—and now time may be very short. MoveOn's plans are bold and detailed; here's a look at what's planned:

  • Promote and strengthen the rapid-response network to reach even more people before Trump fires Mueller or Rosenstein—and have the resources to connect to hundreds of thousands more in the immediate aftermath of a firing.
  • Support the over 800 events already planned. MoveOn will quickly hire extra on-the-ground support in key cities, run ads, hire video crews and photographers, distribute signs, and hire security, if needed.
  • Cut through the right-wing media and Trump's propaganda machine. MoveOn will use its megaphone to reach tens of millions through its rapid-response videos, on social media, and by helping to equip its millions of members with signs, talking points, and everything else they'll need to connect with neighbors about this crisis.
  • Invest in a sustained campaign. If Trump causes a constitutional crisis, our response won't be limited to just one day—it will be every day. MoveOn will demand that Democrats and Republicans take action—and won't stop demanding they act until they do.

Will you chip in $3—or whatever you can afford—to MoveOn to help out?

Yes, I'll chip in right now.

The future is very much in our hands. And, together, we can meet this moment—as full of peril as it is.

Thanks for all you do.

–Robert Reich

FW: Mueller

Trump is fuming. And following his comments, Washington is on heightened alert for him to fire Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees Mueller's investigation, or Mueller himself.

Hi Eddie—I just wanted to make sure you saw Jo's message from the other day.

Dear MoveOn member,

The FBI has stormed the office of Donald Trump's longtime personal lawyer Michael Cohen—the same man who paid $130,000 to hush up Stormy Daniels—which led Trump to make the most direct threat yet to fire special counsel Robert Mueller or Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and shut down the investigation.1

The information leading to this raid sprang from Mueller's independent investigation into the Trump team's connection to Russian efforts to interfere with our elections and Trump's obstruction of justice—a probe that has already yielded multiple guilty pleas, dozens of indictments, and is closing in on Trump's closest allies.2 But Trump called it a "disgrace" and accused the FBI of "breaking in" to Cohen's office.3,4

Trump is fuming. And following his comments, Washington is on heightened alert for him to fire Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees Mueller's investigation, or Mueller himself.

Make no mistake: Firing Rosenstein would constitute a brazen attempt by Trump to obstruct the investigation. It would be akin to Richard Nixon's "Saturday Night Massacre" during Watergate. If Trump fires Rosenstein—which is looking increasingly likely—he'll cross a red line—which is why we must prepare NOW to take immediate action.

This is urgent: Can you donate $3 now to fuel MoveOn's work to defend the Mueller investigation, launch nationwide protests if Trump fires Mueller or Rosenstein, and push Republicans and Democrats to take all action within their power if Trump causes this constitutional crisis?

Yes, I'll chip in.

MoveOn and our allies are prepared for this moment—we started last summer when we organized the "Nobody Is Above the Law" network of rapid-response actions that can be launched within 24 hours if Trump fires Mueller or Rosenstein or attempts to stop the investigation. We now have more than 800 events planned around the country—and moments ago, we crossed 300,000 RSVPs. That's right, 300,000 of your fellow Americans are ready to take to the streets if Trump fires Mueller or Rosenstein.

Now that we're all on red alert, MoveOn needs the resources to:

  • Promote and strengthen this network. We need to reach even more people before Trump fires Mueller or Rosenstein—and have the resources to connect to hundreds of thousands more in the chaotic aftermath of a firing.
  • Support the over 800 events already planned. We'll need to quickly hire extra on-the-ground support in key cities, run ads, hire video crews and photographers, distribute signs, and potentially hire security.
  • Cut through the Trump noise. Trump has a megaphone on Twitter. But MoveOn and MoveOn members have our own megaphones: a MoveOn Video Lab that can produce rapid-response videos that will be seen millions of times, national spokespeople that can appear on all the evening news shows, and, of course, the voices of our members around the country, who'll need to be equipped with signs, actions, talking points, and everything they'll need to connect with neighbors about this crisis.
  • Invest in a sustained campaign. If Trump causes a constitutional crisis, our response won't be limited to just one day—it will be every day.

Can you pitch in $3 to this campaign right now? The stakes couldn't be higher, and we have to be ready.

Yes, I'll pitch in.

MoveOn members have been on the very front lines of progressive efforts to bolster and defend Mueller's Trump-Russia investigation. Now, it's looking more and more likely that we'll be called into the streets to defend our democracy. In the midst of a constitutional crisis we have to act, because no one—absolutely no one—is above the law.

Thanks for all you do.

Trump TV (stop Sinclair)

The video makes it clear that Trump propaganda is reaching millions of households under the cover of "local news." It has stirred up public outrage, creating a vocal backlash that needs to be heard in the halls of the FCC—so that the FCC is shamed into rejecting the dangerous Sinclair-Tribune merger.

Dear MoveOn member,

Sinclair Broadcast Group, often referred to as "Trump TV," requires its 173 local news stations across the country to parrot right-wing propaganda. And now, Sinclair is seeking approval for an unprecedented-in-size merger with Tribune Media.1

Sinclair is already the country's largest broadcaster.2 If the merger goes through, Sinclair's pro-Trump, right-wing propaganda will reach nearly three-quarters of U.S. households.3

That's why MoveOn is launching an emergency campaign to stop the merger.

Can you chip in $3 to help stop the merger? With your help, we'll run a hard-hitting ad on Sinclair stations, featuring their own news anchors parroting right-wing talking points, flood the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) with calls, and more.

Yes, I'll chip in and help stop the Sinclair-Tribune merger.

You may have seen the mega-viral video that circulated this past weekend, which showed on one screen multiple anchors from Sinclair stations across the country, repeating the same right-wing attack on independent media.

Will you pitch in and support our campaign to stop the merger?

Yes, I'll chip in $3 and help the emergency effort to stop the Sinclair-Tribune merger.

If you want a story of sordid corruption, look no further than the history of the Sinclair Broadcast Group.

Sinclair has a long history of forcing its local stations to air "must-run" segments, which are right-wing opinion pieces and wild conspiracy theories.4 Sinclair has a cozy relationship with Trump; in 2016, the Trump campaign team worked out a deal for favorable coverage on Sinclair stations.5

Sinclair wants to take over Tribune Media, which would give Sinclair access to New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, the nation's three largest media markets. Despite limits on media consolidation, the FCC appears to be poised to rubber stamp the merger.6

But now the FCC chair Ajit Pai—who single-highhandedly has sought to kill Net Neutrality—is under investigation by the FCC's inspector general for greasing the wheels for Sinclair.7

The American people are outraged about Sinclair Broadcast Group's "Trump TV," and we must stop Sinclair from making its way into more American homes. That's why MoveOn will launch an emergency campaign to turn this moment into a tipping point. Will you chip in $3?

Yes, I'll chip in.

Here's what we plan to do—if we can raise the money in the next 48 hours:

  • Launch a five-figure ad buy to get this story in front of even more eyes and earn media attention that will keep this story in the headlines.
  • Flood the FCC with thousands of calls.
  • Collect more than 100,000 signatures on a petition against this merger to be delivered to the FCC and critical members of Congress.

Will you chip in to help us run this ad campaign, drive calls to the FCC, and push to block the Sinclair-Tribune merger?

Yes, I'll chip in $3 now.

Thanks for all you do.

Sign the petition re: Corruption at the EPA

Sign the petition to demand Scott Pruitt be fired from the Environmental Protection Agency.

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm actress Piper Perabo, and I started a petition because Scott Pruitt is a stain on the Environmental Protection Agency, a drain on taxpayer dollars, bad for the environment, and should be replaced with someone committed to public service.

Scott Pruitt is corrupt. He wastes taxpayer dollars and is responsible for some of the worst environmental policy decisions in recent history. He must be fired.

I care deeply about the environment and believe the head of the EPA should be someone who is committed to protecting the planet.

Here are five reasons Scott Pruitt should be fired immediately.

1. In Pruitt's first year in office, he spent more than $105,000 on first-class flights.1

2. Pruitt paid a health care lobbyist, who is married to a fossil fuel industry lobbyist, $50 a night—a sweetheart deal in that neighborhood—for access to a condo just a block from the Capitol. He and his daughter stayed there on and off at a cost of more than $6,000, and it was used at times for Republican fundraising events. When authorities had to break down the door after he was mysteriously unresponsive one day, the EPA used taxpayer dollars to cover the $2,460 repair.2

3. Pruitt insisted on spending $42,000 taxpayer dollars to build a private phone booth in his office.3

Sign the petition if you want Scott Pruitt out of the EPA because of this corruption.

4. After being denied approval by the White House, Pruitt found a loophole via the Safe Drinking Water Act to give massive, taxpayer-funded salary increases to two of his favorite staffers (from $107,435 to $164,200 and from $86,460 to $114,590). It's part of the same workaround he used to hire chemical industry lobbyist Nancy Beck as deputy head of the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention so she wouldn't need to sign an ethics agreement.4

5. Pruitt is destroying regulations to ensure clean air and water and is leading Trump's call to back out of the Paris Agreement, because he's long been tied to special interests.

Sign the petition calling on Scott Pruitt to resign or be removed from his taxpayer-funded post at the EPA.

The Washington Post editorial board said, "A swamp monster is running the EPA."5

The Los Angeles Times called for Pruitt to be fired and said: "He does not belong in public service. He's an embarrassment even to this administration. Which is saying something."6

The Concord Monitor said Pruitt "has never had the slightest interest in protecting the environment, has proven that he has as much contempt for ethics rules as he does the settled science of climate change."7

Add your name to this petition to get Scott Pruitt out of the EPA, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

–Piper Perabo

Sign the petition re: Sinclair Broadcast Group

A free and open press is a constitutional guarantee that will be taken away from millions of people if this merger between Sinclair Broadcast Group and Tribune Media is allowed. Sign the petition against the merger.

Stop the dangerous Sinclair Broadcast Group merger.

Stop the merger of Sinclair Broadcast Group with Tribune Media. If approved, the purchase of Tribune Media's 42 stations would enable Sinclair Broadcast Group to reach 72 percent of U.S. households—significantly more than the nationwide audience cap of 39 percent, as determined by Congress.1

Dear MoveOn member,

If you've seen the viral video going around social media, you know how dangerous Sinclair Broadcast Group is to an independent, well-informed public.2 I'm Jon Beard, a MoveOn member in Jacksonville, Florida, and I started a petition to the Federal Communications Commission, which says:

A free and open press is a constitutional guarantee that will be taken away from millions of people, if this merger between Sinclair Broadcast Group and Tribune Media is allowed.

I live in an area where four stations will be controlled by Sinclair, which is already requiring stations to be less independent, by running "required segments" with a conservative, Pro-Trump view.

Thanks!
