Important impeachment update (please read)

"If we had confidence that the president did not commit a crime, we would have said so.

"If we had confidence that the president did not commit a crime, we would have said so."

That's what Robert Mueller said today.

Eddie, Mueller's message today was clear: Department of Justice policy does not allow a sitting president to be indicted. Instead, it us up to Congress to hold Donald Trump accountable through impeachment. So let's get right to the point:

This is a pivotal moment in MoveOn's impeachment campaign, and we need your support. Will you make an emergency donation right now?

The drumbeat for impeachment has been growing louder in recent days, with more members of Congress, presidential candidates, and even a REPUBLICAN going on the record calling for impeachment.

But still, Nancy Pelosi and other top House democrats have been dragging their heels, which is why it is on us to demand that impeachment proceedings begin NOW. With your help, we will take these steps:

  • Host a national day of action in June. This day of action will include events in cities and states across the country where we can show our grassroots people power to Congress, putting pressure on elected officials on the ground in their districts and showing just how many of their constituents are demanding action on impeachment—and where we can educate more folks about what impeachment inquiries are, why Congress must act, and what the process will look like.
  • Make impeachment a 2020 campaign issue. Only a handful of Democratic candidates have come out for impeachment, but it is critical that democratic candidates do not waiver on this issue. Trump has committed multiple impeachable offenses, and we will continue to build pressure on 2020 candidates to come out forcefully and clearly for impeachment.
  • Run ads, create videos, and flood Congress with phone calls. Just last month, MoveOn and its allies delivered 10 million signatures to Congress calling for impeachment, a rebuke to some congressional leaders who have claimed that there is not public momentum for holding Trump accountable. We will continue to run digital ads and billboards, create powerful videos, and drive thousands of calls to Congress to make sure they know how many Americans are demanding that Trump be held accountable for his abuse of communities and baldfaced corruption.

Forty percent of Americans now support impeachment, a dramatic increase in the past few weeks.1

Of course, public opinion is not all that matters. And Congress can't just follow the polls with something as serious as impeachment.

Congress has a responsibility to lead, to uphold the rule of law, and to show voters that it is doing everything in its power to confront an out-of-control and abusive White House.

But increasing public support does give a window to Democrats, if they seize it. And, Eddie, it's our job to make sure they do.

Opponents of impeachment will tell you that it's a distraction from the issues. But the truth is that if we allow our elected officials to be above the law, it strikes at the heart of our democracy and sets a horrible precedent for future lawbreakers at all levels of government. And if we don't use every constitutional tool at our disposal to rein in and confront an abusive, out-of-control administration, we are failing in our duty.

Opponents of impeachment will tell you that it makes Trump more likely to win the 2020 election. We believe, on the other hand, that an energized electorate that has seen leadership from Democrats—and knows about to the crimes and corruption and abuses of the Trump administration—will turn out in droves.

Opponents of impeachment will tell you that voters who learn the truth about Trump's corruption will turn off and tune out. We believe, on the other hand, that first-time voters who see progressive candidates stand for something and fight will vote in 2020 for something better.

Opponents of impeachment will tell you that impeachment could pass the House but will fail in the Senate. That's might be true, but it misses the point: Impeachment forces Republicans to be confronted with actual crimes that Donald Trump committed (and he did commit crimes)—and then vote to let him go free. And, as we saw with Richard Nixon, we don't know what will happen until the evidence is out.

And, no matter what, we cannot let political expediency be the driving force.

Win or lose, we must impeach Donald Trump because it's the moral thing to do—and because our democracy depends on it.

Chip in $3 and help MoveOn keep up our unstoppable drumbeat for impeachment.

We've said it before, and we'll say it again: Impeachment is essential. It's constitutional. It's possible. And ultimately, it will draw lines that will fuel a fight through 2020 if need be.

Thanks for all you do.
