In the midst of a deadly pandemic and just 77 days before the most important election in our lifetimes, Donald Trump is attempting to destroy the post office.
Why? Because Trump wants to cheat his way to re-election.
In an outrageous Fox News interview, Trump openly admitted that he's attempting to sabotage the post office in order to suppress mail-in ballots this November. Trump continues to block coronavirus aid for the post office, starving it of much-needed resources. And he's even installed Louis DeJoy—a Republican megadonor—as the head of the post office to destroy it from within.
Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stops the mail. And we won't let Trump and DeJoy stop it, either. Together, we must ensure every ballot cast is counted.
That's why MoveOn is leading an emergency nationwide campaign to protect the post office. On Saturday, we're hitting the streets with our allies to show Trump, DeJoy, and their GOP cronies that we won't let them get away with their efforts to destroy the Postal Service to steal the election.
We'll be showing up to post offices across the country—from big cities to small towns—to stand in solidarity with postal workers and to make sure that Trump and DeJoy know that their efforts to slow down the mail and stop the Postal Service from processing mail-in ballots won't work.
Mar, people around the country have flooded social media with photos of USPS collection boxes being locked or even removed from city streets and loaded into trucks.1 And 46 states and the District of Columbia were told that the Postal Service cannot guarantee that all ballots cast by mail for the November election will arrive in time to be counted.2
And on top of all of that, DeJoy is taking unilateral actions—cancelling overtime, reassigning or replacing 23 top-level Postal Service employees, and instructing mail carriers to leave mail at distribution centers overnight—to deliberately slow down the mail and bankrupt the post office in advance of November's elections.3
This is nothing short of despicable.
Ever since 1775 when Benjamin Franklin was appointed as the country's first postmaster general, the post office has provided prompt, reliable, and efficient services to every corner of our country.
That tradition of dutiful service to our nation has continued even in the midst of this pandemic, when mail carriers have been risking their lives to deliver letters, food, unemployment checks, and lifesaving medicine to over 135 million households.
Soon, they will be charged with the task of quite literally delivering democracy.
We must show our solidarity with postal workers. We must defend the post office. We must protect our democracy. We must ensure every vote is counted.
