Dear MoveOn member,
It's hard to overestimate the significance of the news that Kamala Harris will be the Democratic vice presidential nominee.
Since the first day of his candidacy, Donald Trump has dehumanized, scapegoated, and terrorized immigrants, Black people, other people of color, LGBTQ people, and women—with his words, actions, and policies.
And now Harris, the daughter of immigrants—her mother from India and her father from Jamaica—and an outspoken and dogged U.S. senator, is joining Joe Biden to take on—and take down—Trump and Mike Pence. At this inflection point in our history, Harris would be the first Black person, first South Asian American, and first woman vice president.
Kamala Harris gives us hope for our country and future.
But we know Trump's playbook all too well, and it's not going to be easy, given how dirty he plays. Just moments after Biden announced the news, Trump called her "extraordinarily nasty"—the first of what will be relentless sexist and racist attacks from Trump, the Republican Party, and the right-wing media.1
It's going to take all of us coming together to fight back and defeat Trump in November.
In her time as the California attorney general and a U.S. senator, Harris has been an outspoken advocate for the people.
And since day one of the Trump administration, she has worked tirelessly to fight back against Trump's corruption, cruelty, and criminality.
Senator Harris is exactly the type of leader we need to rebuild our country in the wake of Trump's destruction and to move our nation toward a more progressive, equitable future.
We are thrilled and proud to support the Biden-Harris ticket, but Trump, the Republican Party, and the right-wing media have made clear that they will do whatever it takes to win—including trying to tear down Sen. Harris with sexist and racist attacks, suppressing the votes of young people and people of color, and cheating their way into a second term.
Kamala Harris is a lifelong public servant and civil rights leader. She was not only the second Black woman in history to be elected to the U.S. Senate but also the first woman to serve as attorney general of California.
As a U.S. senator, Harris has fought to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, make higher education tuition-free for the vast majority of Americans, reform the cash bail system, protect the legal rights of refugees and immigrants, and expand access to affordable, quality health care. As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, she's been a leading voice in the fight to hold the Trump administration accountable.
And most recently, in the aftermath of the police killing of George Floyd, she introduced a bill to ban lynching in all its forms—something Congress has refused to do for more than 100 years.2
Now, she's teaming up with Biden to take on Trump and Pence this November. As vice president, Kamala Harris will be a fearless advocate for the voiceless and vulnerable and a vocal and determined fighter on behalf of all people.
We have only 83 days left until Election Day, and it is going to take every single one of us working together to ensure that on November 3 we elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and put an end to the disastrous Trump administration once and for all.

Unfortunately, we all know what is waiting for Sen. Harris in the hours, days, and weeks to come: a barrage of hate-filled, sexist, and racist attacks from Trump and his allies.
Trump's strategy, just like in 2016, will be to lie, spew hate, spread disinformation, and work to inflame the worst instincts in his base in order to stop a powerful, prepared leader like Sen. Harris from helping to defeat him. But we won't let him get away with it.
Together, we must tell Trump and his racist, sexist allies that we have Sen. Harris's back. We will show up for her. We will fight for her. And we will work harder than ever before to make sure that she and Joe Biden take office next January, ushering in not just a new administration but a new future for the Democratic Party and our nation.
Thanks for all you do.
