I believe that you'll choose the brave path

Mar, will you speak out?

Mar,

In an essay published in The Nation in 2015, Toni Morrisson, the writer and Nobel Prize winner, wrote about how she felt during a time when the world seemed broken.1 She felt helpless, depressed, as though she was paralyzed.

In a conversation with a friend, Morrison realized that it is in these difficult moments, when "the world is bruised and bleeding," that we have to take action. She understood that "there is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear."

And right now, in our current difficult moment, we must listen to Toni Morrison's wisdom and not remain silent. We must speak out, and we must take action, because that is how, in her words, "civilizations heal."

Mar, take action by starting a MoveOn petition on an issue that you care about.

Petitions started by MoveOn members like you have played a part in many important fights, including these recent victories:

A MoveOn member started a petition calling on the Texas Medical Association to withdraw its support of the Texas GOP in-person convention—and the group called on organizers to cancel the convention.

A MoveOn petition demanded the Washington, D.C., NFL franchise change the team name that is offensive to Native Americans—and the team ownership committed to changing the name.

Two MoveOn members created separate petitions calling on Congress to pass a coronavirus relief benefit to help essential, frontline workers—and on July 21, the 2.5 million signatures from these petitions were delivered to Congress in a multi-organizational effort to demand the HEROES Act be passed.

By starting a MoveOn petition, you can shine a spotlight on a problem, make it part of a national conversation, and help bring about a solution.

In these desperate times, Mar, when you may be overwhelmed or even scared, I believe that you'll choose the brave path and speak out—for yourself or for others who who need our support.

Thanks for all you do.
