Dear MoveOn member,
Following Sunday's horrific police shooting of Jacob Blake, professional athletes in the most popular American sports leagues—including the NBA, WNBA, MLB, and MLS—went on strike.
From basketball to baseball to tennis, athletes are sending a clear message: Enough is enough. Police violence and brutality are systemic issues that touch all Black communities, and we demand real solutions.
These strikes are demarcating a historic moment in the sports world and in the fight for justice. Demonstrate your support and make sure that your friends and family join in.
Since the police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor earlier this summer, there's been an unprecedented level of energy demanding justice for Black lives. In cities, towns, and neighborhoods all across the U.S., people have been taking action, from pressuring their local officials to defund the police to going out on the streets and facing tear gas and rubber bullets from militarized and violent law enforcement.
Now, professional athletes, many of whom have already been vocal in their support of the movement for Black lives, have taken the bold step of withholding their labor—potentially risking their livelihoods and facing retaliation from team owners and league officials.
These athletes taking a risk to further the cause of justice need to see our support.
