Dear MoveOn member,
I'm Robert Fox, chief operating officer at MoveOn. As the first quarter of 2021 has come to a close, I'm re-examining MoveOn's budget, and I see some troubling news: Donations have plummeted compared to last year.
As we look toward the 2022 elections, I want to tell you why this is dire news. Democrats hold the slimmest majority in the House in modern history.1 Republicans need to flip only five seats to win the majority, but the GOP just announced that it is investing tens of millions of dollars to take down a whopping 47 House Democrats.2
In the Senate, Democrats' razor-thin majority means that losing even one seat will result in self-proclaimed "grim reaper" Mitch McConnell being reinstalled as Senate majority leader.
While donations are down at MoveOn and other progressive organizations, Donald Trump's Save America PAC just announced that it has $85 million cash on hand, and you and I both know that Trump is hell-bent on using every cent to take down our majority and install a right-wing Congress.3
That means we, progressives, need to run a state-of-the-art, nationwide get-out-the-vote operation in order to win. But if this downward fundraising trend continues, we won't have the cash to do it.
Which is why I've got a knot in my stomach looking at our budget numbers. So I'm writing to you today with an urgent question: Will you chip in $5 a month to help fight back against Trump and the right wing, and to help protect the Democratic majority in Congress?

Mar, it's not just at MoveOn that donations have dropped. Donations across the entire progressive movement have plummeted since President Joe Biden took office.
Meanwhile, the GOP is raking in the money.
Marjorie Taylor Greene, the Trump-loving, QAnon-supporting, extremist congresswoman raised a staggering $3.2 million in the first three months of this year.4
And the National Republican Senatorial Committee has $5 million more in the bank than the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.5
If I wasn't clear already: This is a recipe for disaster. Democrats are getting complacent under the Biden administration, while the right wing is fired up.
As of now, MoveOn remains in a solid financial position, but if our fundraising numbers don't turn around soon, we risk having to shrink our campaigning plans for 2022.
That means fewer organizers. Fewer get-out-the-vote events. Fewer ads on social media, TV, and radio. All of which could lead to fewer Democratic votes and could hand Republicans the majority in Congress.
After an unprecedented year and an economic downturn, I know that times are tough for so many families across the country.
But if you are in a position to do so, will you please chip in $5 a month to help ensure Mitch McConnell doesn't control the Senate again? This couldn't be more urgent.
