Dear MoveOn member,
We are "agonizingly close" to winning the campaign to end the filibuster, the arcane Senate rule that is allowing the GOP minority to block progressive legislation, according to political reporters.1
President Joe Biden made headlines recently when he came out in support of filibuster reform.2 And moderate Democratic senators who were once opposed, including Dianne Feinstein and Amy Klobuchar, are now open to ending the filibuster.3,4
That's why Mitch McConnell is absolutely panicking. He knows that if we end the filibuster, we will finally be able to pass urgent legislation to address the climate crisis, reform our health care, tackle racist police violence, and much, much more.
Mar, the filibuster has long been a weapon used by racist senators to block progress on civil rights and racial justice, which is why former President Barack Obama has called the filibuster a "Jim Crow relic" that needs to be abolished "to secure the God-given rights of every American."5
And today, the filibuster is still being used to stall progress and obstruct President Biden's agenda.
While House Democrats have passed sweeping bills to reform our democracy, protect our voting rights, enshrine bold discrimination protections for LGBTQ people, curb the gun violence epidemic, strengthen unions and worker protections, create a path to citizenship for Dreamers and essential farmworkers and more, the filibuster means that every single one of these huge and historic bills has virtually no chance of passing.
That's why Senator Elizabeth Warren calls the filibuster "Mitch McConnell's veto."6
It's time to end the filibuster. We have a once-in-a-generation chance to pass bold and historic legislation. And we can't let Mitch McConnell, Senate Republicans, and a racist and arcane Senate rule stop us.
Thanks for all you do.
