The end of the Internet as we know it?

Mr. President, please save the Internet. You can't let the FCC Chairman you appointed, Tom Wheeler, break your promise to keep the Internet open and free. Please publicly state your support for the FCC to reclassify the Internet as a public utility, like our water, electricity, and phone lines.

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm Jay Galbreath, a MoveOn member in Mableton, Georgia, and I started a petition on MoveOn.org to President Obama because if he doesn't act soon it could mean an end to the Internet as we know it.

Please add your name to my petition calling on President Obama to save the Internet.

In 2009, I worked as an Associate at Booz Allen Hamilton, one of the oldest and most prestigious government consulting firms, to support the implementation of an Obama administration program that invested $9.7 billion dollars to expand Internet access in vulnerable communities that needed it.

I couldn't believe it when I heard that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) was advancing a proposal to allow corporations like Verizon and Comcast, which pipe the Internet into our homes, to create fast and slow lanes for the data we want to access based on a website's ability to pay. The FCC's proposal would bring an end to the Internet as we know it, undoing a lot of the progress that I helped make with the Obama administration to bring Internet access to everyone.

President Obama appointed all of the FCC's commissioners. If he speaks out against their proposal, he could save the Internet. That's why I started my petition. Will you add your name?

I supported President Obama in 2008 and 2012 in part because of his commitment to Internet freedom, which he's publicly declared multiple times. In 2007, then-candidate Obama specifically stated that Internet service providers like Comcast and Verizon should not be able to charge "different rates to different websites"—but that is exactly what the FCC Chairman President Obama appointed, Tom Wheeler, is proposing.

We need to make sure President Obama doesn't let Chairman Wheeler advance a proposal that breaks one of his campaign promises. If the President comes out in support of the FCC reclassifying the Internet as public utility, like our water, electricity, and phone lines, then he'll be making sure that all those communities we helped to get Internet access can continue to enjoy a free and open Internet, along with everyone else in the country.

Click here to sign the petition: Urge President Obama to stand by his campaign promise by publicly and unequivocally stating his support for Internet freedom.

Thanks!
