A pregnant mother charged for helping her son use the bathroom

Brooke Johns was charged with disorderly conduct for letting her toddler pee in a parking lot when he couldn't hold it long enough to get to the bathroom.

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

Brooke Johns was driving with her 3-year-old son in Augusta, Georgia, last month, when her son said he had to go to the bathroom right away. She realized he wasn't going to make it to the bathroom, so Johns took him out of the car and shielded him while he went in the gas station parking lot.

That's when a Richmond County deputy ticketed the mother, who is also eight months pregnant, for disorderly conduct.1

Tell Richmond County to drop the charges against Brooke Johns. Their lack of empathy and abuse of power are shameful.

Brooke Johns is scheduled to appear in court just days before she is due with her second child. If she is convicted, she faces a $1,000 fine and 60 days in prison.

The sheriff's office is misusing its time and the court's time. Not only that, but this is an egregious abuse of the law. Many men stop along the highway to relieve themselves without being cited. This was a small child who was being potty trained. A conversation with Johns would have been sufficient. Parents know this is an unavoidable situation at times. Richmond County should drop the charges immediately and stop harassing parents.
