Dear MoveOn member,
"I am completely and utterly perplexed by those who argue that perjury and obstruction of justice are not high crimes and misdemeanors."1
That's what Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had to say about the need to impeach Bill Clinton back in 1999.
I don't know about you, Eddie, but I am completely and utterly perplexed by those who argue that Donald Trump has not done the exact same things.
But thanks to the right-wing media, Trump's base would never know that McConnell—and many other current Republican members of Congress—have made such compelling arguments for impeachment.
Back in 1999, McConnell was far from alone in his conviction that obstructing justice was an impeachable offense.
Senator Lindsey Graham said, "We're a nation of laws, and that's what this case has always been about to me … He turned the judicial system upside down, every way but loose. He sent his friends to lie for him. He lied for himself."2
Senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma pointed out that, "Isn't it true that [the federal law on witness tampering] criminalizes anyone who corruptly persuades or engages in misleading conduct with the intent to influence the testimony of any person in an official proceeding?"3
Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina said, "The United State is a nation of laws, not men. And I do not believe we can ignore the facts or disregard the Constitution so that the president can be placed above the law."4
We certainly agree with these senators—and the dozens more current Republican members of the House and Senate—who in the past have forcefully and clearly stated that obstruction of justice is an impeachable offense.
The Mueller report clearly shows that Trump has done just that—over and over and over again. But Trump's base is not hearing these arguments from the talking heads on Fox News.
The Mueller report clearly stated that it was not the job of the investigators to come to a conclusion about the consequences for the 11 instances of obstruction of justice that they documented Trump committed.5 That is, they said, the job of Congress.
And it must be done through impeachment proceedings.
But still, far too many members of Congress are turning their backs on their constitutional duty, willing to let Trump prove once and for all that he is above the law.
We cannot let this happen. We need to change the conversation about impeachment and show just how hypocritical Republicans in Congress are being in their refusal to even consider impeachment proceedings against Trump, when they were more than ready to remove Bill Clinton for obstructing justice.
Fox News hosts will NEVER call for Trump's impeachment, and if Republicans know that their voters are forming their opinions from Fox's talking points, they will never waver in their commitment to Trump. But if we can break through the blockade on Fox and show their viewers exactly what their Republican heroes have said about impeachment, we can shift the narrative and put a crack between Trump and his base.
Just imagine what Donald Trump will think when he sees it …
Thanks for all you do.
