Super Tuesday Disaster: Demand better elections

Add your name to show your support.

Dear MoveOn Member,

I'm Common Cause of Devon Nir and I started a petition to State and federal lawmakers, which says:

Many Americans were denied their right to vote on Super Tuesday because of issues like long lines and failing equipment.

When voters can't make themselves heard, our democracy suffers. That's why before November, our state and federal lawmakers must implement the proven, common-sense solutions that make our elections fair, secure, and accessible.

On Super Tuesday, Hervis Rogers waited almost 7 hours to cast his ballot -- because his Texas polling place wasn't equipped with enough machines. He finally got to vote at 1:30 a.m., then had to head straight to his morning shift at work.

And Hervis wasn't alone. Across the country, Super Tuesday voters were subjected to outrageously long lines, failing equipment, polling place closures, and other barriers to the ballot box.

If our voting systems were this overwhelmed by a primary election, when only a quarter of states were voting -- imagine how large-scale that failure could be in November. That's why we must act NOW.

- Every polling place needs enough paper ballots and backup paper registration books to keep the lines moving when machines malfunction.
- States must adopt robust early voting and vote-by-mail programs that give voters more flexibility.
- We must restore the protections of the Voting Rights Act -- and stop self-interested politicians from enacting racist laws that disenfranchise voters of color.

Our right to vote is the cornerstone of our democracy. And this year, when the stakes are so high, experts are expecting unprecedented turnout.

Super Tuesday was a wake-up call -- and now, our elected officials must act. Add your name to tell our state and federal representatives: step up for our elections!
