Dear MoveOn member,
Tomorrow, Republican Senators Joni Ernst of Iowa and Steve Daines of Montana will go to the Senate floor and—in a profound show of contempt for Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Senate norms, and voters everywhere—vote to confirm ultraconservative Amy Coney Barrett to a lifetime appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court.
It will be done: They will lock in a 6-3 far-right majority on the nation's highest court.
Here's the thing: These two senators are locked in two of the tightest re-election races in the country, with the Iowa race now considered "the race likeliest to decide Senate control."1,2
We have to fight back, Mar. Justice Ginsburg never gave up, nor can we.
In these razor-tight races, it's going to take all of us coming together to hold Joni Ernst and Steve Daines accountable and defeat them at the ballot box. And if we're successful, we'll almost surely end Mitch McConnell's cynical and devastating reign as the Senate majority leader.
Democrat Theresa Greenfield is a "proud farm kid" who worked her way through community college, became a community planner, and now heads up a small business.3
Her first husband was a union electrician who died tragically on the job. She had a 13-month-old at the time and was pregnant. Social Security helped save her family—and now she wants to go to Washington to fight to protect it.
Greenfield also believes deeply in public education and affordable health care for all. And she wants to take away corporate lobbyists' loopholes and special tax breaks and give the breaks to workers instead.
Greenfield is neck and neck in the polls with Joni Ernst.4 But with only 10 days left to vote, she's getting outspent by Ernst and the GOP's billionaire backers.
Steve Bullock is the popular two-term governor of Montana who expanded Medicaid, fought to end the corrupting influence of money in politics, and protected public lands. Before serving in public office, Bullock was a labor lawyer and led a successful state initiative to raise the minimum wage.5
The race could be decided by just a few thousand votes, and Bullock's path to victory is turning out union workers and Native Americans.6 But he needs our help to do it.
Mar, we have to hold Republicans Joni Ernst and Steve Daines accountable for their outrageous power grab that threatens so much—our health care, our freedoms, and the fight for justice for Black people, immigrants, women, the LGBTQ community ... for all of us and for generations to come.
Thanks for all you do.
