Dear MoveOn member,

On her show on MSNBC, "The ReidOut," Joy Reid drew a harmful comparison between Donald Trump's white nationalist incitements and Muslim leaders, reinforcing a false, Islamophobic narrative and ignoring the particular history and dynamics of white supremacy in the United States.¹

Reid must apologize, and MSNBC needs to take action to ensure anti-Muslim bigotry has no place on its network.

Joy Reid, the host of "The ReidOut" on MSNBC, must apologize for spreading the false, dangerous myth that Muslims are inherently radical and violent.

We call on Joy Reid and MSNBC to apologize and vocally reject Islamophobia.

White supremacist violence has a long and violent history here in the U.S. and around the world. Reid could have used any of a number of examples of the radicalization of violent right-wing extremists, without bringing Muslim communities into the conversation. Repeating harmful tropes associating Muslims with violence is not helpful and could let Trump and his white nationalist supporters off the hook for their actions.

Representative Ilhan Omar called Reid's "casual Islamophobia" hurtful and dangerous.² Representative Rashida Tlaib wrote that it feeds into the "harmful anti-Muslim rhetoric & actions that we continue to see in this country."³ Islamophobic rhetoric like this has enabled the surveillance of Muslim communities in this country and is weaponized to justify endless wars in the Middle East and Muslim countries.

This kind of bigotry leads to violence, and Reid's and MSNBC's silence is unacceptable. Hateful speech—even when unintended—imperils marginalized communities. It shouldn't take days for a simple apology and clarification.
