Dear MoveOn member,
My name is Robert Fox, and I'm MoveOn's chief operating officer. The last time I emailed you was over the summer—100 days out from the election—to share with you what MoveOn was working on to defeat Trump and the GOP.
Today officially marks 49 days until Election Day, so I wanted to follow up with you now, to share an update on our work for this final stretch. We have fewer than 50 days to ensure that Trump is defeated, Mitch McConnell loses control of the Senate, and a blue wave washes over the country. To make this happen, MoveOn is sprinting to the finish line of the biggest, boldest election program in our 22-year history.
But we need your help to meet our budget for the final stretch and fully bring these plans to life. I crunched the numbers this morning, and I'm so grateful that in just the past week, thousands of MoveOn members like you have stepped up and contributed to our collective work. But we still need to raise $197,453 by midnight to meet our budget goals.
Whether you have yet to make your first donation to MoveOn this year or you're a longtime donor, I need to explain to you why your donation today is so critical.
The fact of the matter is that many people wait until just days before Election Day to chip in. While I'm so grateful for every dollar that every MoveOn member contributes, the truth is that the earlier you contribute, the better.
Here's why: Voting is already underway in the critical battleground states that will decide who wins this election. Last week, voters in North Carolina began getting their ballots in their mailboxes, and by the end of this week, voters in half of the battleground states will begin voting.
Due to the pandemic, millions of people—especially Democrats—are voting by mail for the first time in their lives. While mail-in voting is safe and secure, we know that people might have questions about how to fill out and return their ballots.
That's why my colleague Emma is leading a powerful get-out-the-vote initiative called "ballot chasing." Emma and her ballot chase team are texting mail-in voters the information they need to properly fill out their ballots, and the team is on hand to answer any questions voters might have. This work is especially important, because more than half a million mail-in ballots were rejected during this year's primary season due to people improperly filling out their ballots.1 And in a recent poll, more than half of voters under the age of 35 say they don't have the resources or knowledge they need to vote by mail.2
But that's not all we're doing to ensure every vote is counted. Starting this Friday, voters in the swing state of Minnesota will be able to vote early in person. So my colleague Elsie and her team are creating videos tailor-made to get the word out and to give Minnesota voters the info they need to vote early at a polling place.
And my colleague Kate is pioneering an innovative friend-to-friend voter mobilization program called "Vote Tripling." Recent studies show that one of the most effective ways to turn out voters is if their friends and family encourage them to vote. So Kate and her team are asking MoveOn members to take Vote Tripling pledges: pledges to reach out to three friends, help them make a plan to vote, and ensure they vote in the fall. This program is so effective that last week Trump's campaign began using it as well—which means we need to double down and fight back.
That's just some of what the team here at MoveOn is doing to win this election.
But my colleagues can't do this alone. They need your help.
I'm going to be honest with you, Mar. At many other political organizations, the chief operating officer spends most of their time wining and dining the billionaires and corporate donors that bankroll them.
But not at MoveOn. I don't answer to corporate bosses, and billionaires don't call the shots around here. MoveOn is powered by thousands of small-dollar grassroots donations from members like you across the country.
Thanks for all you do.
