The Senate needs to hear from us TODAY

Republicans are making a power grab. Democrats need to hear from us today.

Instead of honoring the legacy of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump immediately started moving forward their plans for a power grab to transform the highest court for a generation.

And unfortunately, many members of the GOP are walking the McConnell/Trump line to fire up their right-wing base and move to alter the Supreme Court—putting at risk so many things we've fought for, from the Affordable Care Act to reproductive rights to immigration and more.

But there is hope: A number of Republican senators have said they believe the nominee should be chosen by the winner of the November election.

While we need to pressure Republicans—and we are doing that—Democratic senators like Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten E. Gillibrand also need to hear from us. This is a moment where Democrats need to know that if the Republicans pack the court, we will expect Democrats to expand the court to restore balance when we take power.

Can you call Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand today and tell them: Honor the legacy of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Fight like hell against any attempt by Trump and McConnell to steal a Supreme Court seat. And commit that if the GOP pursues this route, Democrats will expand the court when they take the majority.

It's possible—just possible—that if Democrats make clear they are serious, a number of Republican senators will back down and push back against their leadership or form a "gang" of senators to halt a nomination. And if that doesn't happen, then it's imperative that Democrats understand that their constituents don't expect them to show fealty to arcane rules while Republicans create entrenched minority rule. We expect them to use every power they have to put the will of the American people front and center in Washington.

We know that Republican senators are the problem here. But we also know Democrats need to bring every ounce of power to the fights ahead—in the upcoming weeks and over the years to come.
