I'm Lois Wilkins, a MoveOn member in Freeland, Michigan, and I started a petition to the U.S. Department of Justice which says:

Launch an immediate and independent federal investigation into Sandra Bland's traffic stop, arrest, and death, just days later, in a Texas jail. Circumstances surrounding her death are suspicious, and just-released video footage raises more unresolved questions and tensions about how Black people are treated by police in the United States.

The Department of Justice must conduct an independent investigation into the death of Sandra Bland in Texas. The circumstances surrounding her traffic stop are suspicious and deserve an independent, thorough, and accountable investigation—especially in light of new video footage.¹

We cannot allow the local police to investigate themselves. The Department of Justice has the authority—and power—to find out what happened to Sandra Bland.
