I'm Peter Stocker of the organization Friends of the Earth. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is considering approval of genetically engineered salmon, which would be the first time in history a regulator has approved a genetically engineered animal for human consumption.
By ensuring that the world's biggest retailers refuse to sell it, we can send a strong message that there is no market for it. That's why I started a petition to Craig Jelinek, CEO of Costco, which says:
Despite nearly 2 million comments from the public and scientists saying we don't want GMO salmon, the FDA may still approve it.1 This new "frankenfish" could end up on your dinner plate—and it likely won't be labeled.
This would set a dangerous precedent, since GMO salmon would be the first genetically engineered animal approved for human consumption. It could pave the way for GMO pigs, chickens, and cows to enter the market.
By ensuring that the world's biggest retailers refuse to sell GMO salmon, we can send a strong message that there is no market for it and stop it from reaching supermarkets.
Demand that Costco keep GMO salmon off its shelves.
Thanks!
–Peter
