Dear fellow MoveOn member,
This week, late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel brought his son who has a serious heart disease—and who underwent a second heart surgery last week—on air and pleaded to Congress to reauthorize funding for the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which serves 8.9 million children.
I'm Rev. Phillip Geliebter, a MoveOn member in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and I agree with Kimmel. If we can ignore the most vulnerable among us, what are we doing as a nation?
Kimmel shed tears while making an impassioned statement, saying the following words that we should all agree with, Republican, Democrat, or otherwise:
"If your baby is going to die and doesn't have to, it shouldn't matter how much money you make."
CHIP currently serves 8.9 million children. The program was last reauthorized by Congress in 2015, and was up for reauthorization again on September 30 this year. Congress failed to reauthorize it and let that deadline pass. Without reauthorization, the money will start to run out soon, and children's lives will be at risk.
