Tell Sens. Schumer and Gillibrand: Thanks for standing up for the ACA

Earlier this week, Senate Republicans took their first steps to take away health care from millions of people,

Dear New York MoveOn member,

It's begun,

Earlier this week, Senate Republicans took their first steps to take away health care from millions of people, voting 51-49 to begin the process of repealing the Affordable Care Act. Every Democrat, including Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten E. Gillibrand, voted against repeal.1

The stakes are impossibly high—and this is a fight we could win. Already, MoveOn members have made thousands of calls and rallied at congressional offices and Congress is feeling the heat. Multiple Republican Senators are now wavering, saying they won’t vote to repeal without having a replacement ready, which could delay a repeal vote indefinitely.2

If just three Republican Senators vote against repeal then we can stop this tragedy before it happens, save the ACA to build on in the future, and stop the extreme Trump agenda in it's tracks. But we'll also need every Democratic Senator on board and fighting to block repeal every day.

Can you take 5 minutes today to call Sens. Schumer and Gillibrand to thank them for standing up for the Affordable Care Act?

Here's where to call:

  • Sen. Schumer - (202) 224-6542
  • Sen. Gillibrand - (202) 224-4451

Here’s what you can say: “I’m calling to say thanks for standing up for the Affordable Care Act. 1,139,000 people in New York could lose their coverage. Please do everything you can to block the Republicans from repealing the ACA.”

Then click here to tell us how your call went.

In the years since the Affordable Care Act was passed, more than 20 million people have gotten health insurance. Studies have shown that in its first three years the ACA saved an estimated 50,000 lives.3

Insurance companies can no longer deny people coverage due to pre-existing conditions. Women aren't discriminated against and charged more for coverage. Millions of people have received life-saving care and have been saved from financial ruin thanks to this law. And Trump and the Republicans are planning to take it all away.

Members of Congress and their staff all say that phone calls are the best way to get the attention of an elected official, and we need to let Sens. Schumer and Gillibrand know that we've got their back when they stand up to these reckless attacks on people's health care.

Can you make a call to Sens. Schumer and Gillibrand now to say thanks for their vote?

Here's where to call:

  • Sen. Schumer - (202) 224-6542
  • Sen. Gillibrand - (202) 224-4451

You can say: "I’m calling to say thanks for standing up for the Affordable Care Act. 1,139,000 people in New York could lose their coverage. Please do everything you can to block the Republicans from taking away their health care." Then share your personal story if you have one.

Republicans, and some in the media, are acting like repeal is a sure thing. They're dead wrong. When the public rises in outrage, Congress can turn on a dime—as it has done many times before, from Syrian refugees in 2015 to SOPA in 2011 to many others. And this time, the stakes are literally life or death for many constituents of every Senator and member of Congress.

This is when people power matters most. And if we wield that power right—by picking up the phone, by protesting, by recruiting friends and family to speak out—we will not only prevail, but we will show Trump and the GOP that they may hold office, but they still answer to the American public.

Thanks for all you do.
