Dear MoveOn member,
Every time there's another school shooting, we say "never again." The Republicans give their "thoughts and prayers," tell us not to politicize the situation, and then make sure that gun control is dead on arrival in Congress.
That's why MoveOn isn't waiting for another school shooting. We're trying to do something big TODAY. We're joining other organizations, members of Congress, and celebrities to try to raise $1 million in just 24 hours to defeat eight NRA-backed Republicans in key battleground races that could decide control of Congress. We're calling them "the NR8"—and defeating them will send a clear national message to the NRA and all politicians. It's a big and ambitious goal, and we need your help to do it. Will you help out?
I'm so furious with politicians who fear the NRA too much to protect our kids from gun violence.
I'm so furious with politicians who offer "thoughts and prayers" to the victims' families after each mass shooting and then turn around and block the most basic proposals to curb gun violence.
But something incredible is happening right now: Following the Parkland shooting and the inspiring leadership of students from Parkland and across the country, public opinion of the NRA has soured. For the first time in nearly two decades, more Americans have a negative view of the NRA than a positive one.1
The biggest shift away from the NRA is happening in the suburban districts where Hillary Clinton beat Trump—the very districts that could end GOP control of Congress in just 27 days.
This perfect storm could replace eight NRA-loving Republicans with eight Democrats who will fight for life-saving gun laws—and end GOP control of Congress at the same time.
The NR8 are seriously out of step with their constituents. But the NRA will spare no expense to defeat their Democratic challengers, who are ready to stand up to the NRA and stop gun violence.
The reality is that 97% of Americans—including most gun owners—support universal background checks before someone buys a gun, and it's proven to be one of the most effective ways to reduce gun deaths.2
MoveOn members have fought for gun control for years. MoveOn members stood on the stage with President Obama when he signed executive orders to close gun loopholes. We joined with activists to call on the Democratic Party to reject donations from the gun lobby. We helped elect candidates in Virginia—where the NRA is headquartered—last November, just a month after the Las Vegas shooting, helping a half-dozen candidates take on and defeat NRA-backed rivals for state legislature. And we supported student-let protests earlier this year. But now the real test is defeating the NR8—and showing that congressional seats, and the balance of power in D.C., may hang on whether one has the courage to stand with our children, families, and communities, and to stand up to gun manufacturers and lobbyists.
Today, we have an unprecedented chance to end the obstruction of eight NRA-backed Republicans—and elect eight Democrats, such as civil rights attorney Colin Allred in Texas, who are ready to fight the NRA and prevent gun violence. Will you join us?
Yes, I'm in! I'll chip in $3 now.
Thanks for all you do.
