Dear MoveOn member,
According to the Department of Transportation's inspector general, Trump's former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao repeatedly abused her position by helping her family promote their shipping business, Foremost Group, that was founded by her father and is currently run by her sister.1
The inspector general referred the case for criminal prosecution because Chao violated federal ethics laws, but, unsurprisingly, President Trump's Justice Department chose to look the other way as yet another one of his appointees abused their public office for private gain.2
It's outrageous, but not surprising, that even after the inspector general referred these serious acts of nepotism for a criminal investigation, the Trump administration declined to take action. Trump and his cronies in the Republican Party are rife with corruption. That is crystal clear, especially after Trump incited a deadly insurrection fueled by white supremacy and spineless Republican leaders responded by voting to let him get away with it.
We can do better. As the Biden administration works to mitigate and reverse the damage done by Trump and the GOP Treason Caucus, holding abusers of power like former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao accountable is a critical first step.
