Dear fellow MoveOn member,
The United States Postal Service has just awarded the contract to replace up to 165,000 of their aging delivery fleet to a company that will produce mostly gas-fueled vans.1 According to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, just 10% will be electric.2
This is an incredible opportunity to usher in electric vehicles, which are significantly better for both the environment and for people than gasoline-fueled vehicles. Together, we can turn this around.
Replacing the current fleet of mail delivery vehicles with all-electric, non-polluting vehicles will prevent many thousands of premature deaths, reduce toxic exposure to the delivery drivers themselves, and significantly reduce the government's carbon dioxide emissions. It would also boost electric vehicle manufacturing and incentivize building out charging infrastructure in the U.S., creating well-paying jobs, and reducing costs and removing barriers for everyone to go electric.
These vehicles will stop and go, stop and go on our streets for the next 20-30 years. We know that weaning ourselves off carbon fuels is essential to avoid more catastrophic climate changes. Please join me in urging the U.S. postmaster general and governing board members to change this decision and electrify the fleet.
Thanks!
