Dear MoveOn member,
It's the nightmare scenario: Young people, women, people of color, and other Democratic voting blocs stay home on Election Day. Voter suppression tactics disenfranchise thousands of key voters. Right-wing Republicans—riding a wave of fear and resentment—turn out in force.
And right now, it's a likely scenario. As The New York Times says, "Democrats may be preparing for an electoral apocalypse."1
Together, Jeff Merkley and Al Franken have been part of the firewall that has stopped the most dangerous proposals coming from the House of Representatives. Along with senators like Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, they are fighting the good fight.
Senator Elizabeth Warren has called Senator Merkley her "mentor." He led the charge to pass filibuster reform—clearing the way for dozens of judges appointed by the president to be confirmed. He's been one of the toughest voices calling for Wall Street accountability. And he'll leave a social justice legacy for decades to come (just think of all the marriage equality momentum over the past months).
Al Franken has been one of the strongest voices in favor of net neutrality. He is a leader in the effort to get money out of politics and to undo the disastrous effects of the Citizens United decision. And he's been a fierce opponent of the Comcast-Time Warner Cable merger and other telecom horribleness. We may not have the resources of conservative billionaires. But we have the ability to pull together and make sure that, no matter what happens on November 4, these two senators continue their work.
Can you chip in $3 to support progressive champs Al Franken and Jeff Merkley?
Yes, I'll chip in to defend these progressive champs. Thanks for all you do.
